These works are part of a series dealing with the concept of patriarchy through the painting and sculpting of a phallus. In relation to my broader art practice, here again I strive for mystery by using unexpected combinations, and religious symbols that are part of our collective memory. Sometimes, the result ends up humorous. I made the “Phallus by a window” shortly after spending some time in India, inspired by the Shiva Lingam, a Hindu religious symbol. The landscape is of New York City, facing Queens, from an apartment I used to live in. The NYC scape is an interesting backdrop for a phallus as the city itself is full of architectural phalli. Before creating these paintings, I first made a sculpted flower-vase in the shape of a phallus, using glass and papier-mâché technique. I then placed the papier-mâché phallus by the window and painted from observation.
Phallus and nature or the Vanaprastha.
